How Pricing Works

There's No Price List. Here's Why.

If you've gotten a few car shipping quotes, you've probably noticed they're all over the place. That's not because someone is making numbers up. It's because car transport prices work more like airline tickets than a menu.

A carrier is filling a truck with 7 to 10 cars headed in roughly the same direction. Your price is basically your share of that trip, plus what it takes to get your car on that truck. Things like distance, the route, the season, and how easy your car is to pick up all change that number.

Below is everything that goes into the price, and what to watch for when you compare quotes.

What a Final Quote Includes

  • Door-to-door pickup and delivery
  • A vetted, insured carrier
  • The Bill of Lading inspection at both ends
  • No surprise fees added after booking
  • A price that's good for 7 days

Price Factors

What Determines Car Transport Prices

These are the things that actually move the number, roughly in order of how much they matter.

Distance

Longer trips cost more overall, but the price per mile drops as the distance goes up. A 300-mile trip costs more per mile than a 2,500-mile one.

The Route

Busy lanes between big cities have lots of trucks competing for cars, which keeps prices down. Small towns off the interstate take more coordinating.

Time of Year

Summer moving season, the end of the month, and snowbird season all push prices up. Late fall and winter are often cheaper on most routes.

Open or Enclosed

Open carriers fit more cars, so each one costs less. Enclosed trailers carry fewer cars and cost noticeably more.

Vehicle Size & Weight

A full-size pickup takes up more room and weight on the truck than a compact car. Lifted trucks and duallys get a custom quote.

Running or Not

A car that doesn't run has to be winched on and off, which takes extra time and equipment.

Pickup Flexibility

A window of a few days gives more carriers a chance to fit you in. A single fixed date narrows your options.

How Fast You Need It

Expedited shipping gets priority matching, and that costs more than a standard window.

Access at Pickup & Delivery

If a big carrier can't reach your street, meeting at a nearby lot keeps things simple and avoids delays.

Comparing Quotes

Why the Lowest Car Transport Price Can Cost You More

Most car shipping companies are brokers. They post your car to a load board, and carriers choose which cars to take based on what they pay. If a broker quotes you too low, carriers just skip your car.

So your pickup date comes and goes. Then you get a call saying the price needs to go up to get a truck. By then you've lost a week, and you end up paying what it should have cost from the start, or more.

That's why we give final-price quotes. We price at what carriers on your route actually accept, and the number doesn't change after you book.

How to Compare Quotes

  • Ask if the price is final or an estimate
  • Ask what's due before a carrier is assigned
  • Make sure it's door-to-door, not terminal
  • Confirm open vs. enclosed on every quote
  • Check how long the quote is good for
  • Be wary of any quote far below the rest

FAQ

Car Transport Prices FAQs

How are car transport prices calculated?

Mostly by distance, the route, the time of year, the size of the vehicle, and whether you choose open or enclosed transport. Whether the car runs and how flexible your dates are also play a part.

Why are car shipping quotes so different from each other?

Some companies give low estimates to win the booking, then raise the price when no carrier will take the car. Others quote what carriers actually accept. Always ask whether a quote is a final price.

Is car shipping cheaper per mile on long trips?

Yes. The total goes up with distance, but the cost per mile goes down. Short trips cost more per mile because the driver still has to load, unload, and detour for your car.

How long is a car transport quote good for?

Our quotes are good for 7 days. After that, you'll need a new quote, because carrier prices change with the season and demand.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. The price we quote is the price you pay. It doesn't change after you book.

How do I pay?

Nothing is due at booking. Once a carrier is dispatched, you pay a deposit or the full price by Zelle or Venmo. Any remaining balance is paid to the driver at delivery by cash or check.

Is my car insured during transport?

Yes. Every carrier we work with is required to carry active cargo insurance. Your vehicle's condition is documented on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the vehicle are not covered.
