Shipping Your Car From Texas to Michigan
Most cars going from Texas to Michigan travel somewhere between 1,100 and 1,700 miles. Dallas to Grand Rapids is on the short end. Brownsville to Detroit is about as long as it gets. Either way, it's a big drive to do yourself, and it usually means two days behind the wheel.
People ship on this route for all kinds of reasons. Some are moving back home. Some got a job offer in Detroit or Grand Rapids. A lot of them are Winter Texans heading north for the summer who don't want to drive both directions every year.
We're a Texas-based broker, and we book carriers that already run north out of Texas. You tell us where the car is and where it needs to go. We give you a final price, and you pay nothing until a truck is actually assigned.

The Route
How Cars Get From Texas to Michigan
There's no single interstate that does the whole trip. Out of Dallas–Fort Worth, a lot of carriers take I-30 to Little Rock and head north toward St. Louis. From there it's I-70 to Indianapolis, then up into Michigan on I-69.
Trucks leaving Houston often run up US-59 through Texarkana and join the same corridor. Others go through Memphis and Ohio and come into Detroit on I-75. The route your car takes mostly depends on where else the driver is stopping. That's also why transit is quoted as a range, not a set date.
Along the Way
- Dallas → Little Rock~320 mi
- Little Rock → St. Louis~350 mi
- St. Louis → Indianapolis~245 mi
- Indianapolis → Detroit~285 mi
Approximate distances. The exact route depends on the carrier's other stops.
Timing
When to Ship Texas to Michigan
This route has a real rhythm to it, mostly because of snowbirds. Here's how the year usually goes.
Spring
The busiest stretch for northbound trucks. Winter Texans head home to Michigan from March through May, so book 2 to 3 weeks out if you can.
Summer
Peak moving season everywhere, but Michigan roads are wide open. Expect steady demand and normal transit times.
Fall
Most traffic flips south as snowbirds come down for the winter. Northbound trucks have more room, which can help on price.
Winter
Lake-effect snow, especially in West Michigan, can slow the last leg by a day or two. It still runs all winter. Just leave a little slack in your plans.
Pricing
How Much Does Shipping a Car From Texas to Michigan Cost?
There's no flat rate. These are the things that actually move the price.
Distance
Dallas to Detroit is around 1,190 miles. The Rio Grande Valley to Detroit is closer to 1,700. More miles costs more overall, but long hauls are cheaper per mile.
Time of Year
Spring is when everybody wants to go north at once. Shipping in the fall or early winter usually means more open trucks headed your way.
Pickup City
Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio sit right on major carrier lanes. A small town in West Texas takes a little more coordinating.
Delivery City
Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Ann Arbor are easy stops. Northern Michigan and the U.P. are farther off the main routes and price accordingly.
Open or Enclosed
Open transport is how most cars make this trip, and it's the cheapest option. Enclosed keeps your car out of the weather and away from road salt.
Vehicle Size & Condition
Big trucks and SUVs take up more trailer space. A car that doesn't run needs a winch, which also adds to the price.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
Some companies advertise a low number to win your booking, then raise it once your car is waiting on a truck. We don't. The price we quote is the price you pay, and there's $0 due when you book.

Before You Ship & After You Arrive
A few things specific to this route that are worth knowing ahead of time.
Registering in Michigan
Michigan expects new residents to title and register their car soon after they move, at a Secretary of State office. You'll need Michigan no-fault auto insurance first. There's no emissions or safety inspection. Check the Michigan SOS site for current rules.
Road Salt
Michigan salts its roads hard from November through March. If you're shipping a classic or a car you've kept rust-free in Texas, enclosed transport is worth a look. Either way, rinse the underside after a winter delivery.
Winter Texans
Spend winters in the Valley or on the coast and summers back home in Michigan? We ship cars both directions every year.
Snowbird car shipping →Northern Michigan & the U.P.
We deliver to Traverse City, Marquette, and everywhere in between. Rural roads up north can be tight for a big carrier, so your driver may call ahead and meet you at a nearby lot.

FAQ
Texas to Michigan Car Shipping FAQs
How long does shipping a car from Texas to Michigan take?
Usually 3 to 6 days once the car is picked up. Dallas to Detroit is on the shorter end. Pickups in the Rio Grande Valley or deliveries in northern Michigan can take a day or so longer, and winter weather can add time on the Michigan end.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Texas to Michigan?
It depends on your exact pickup and delivery addresses, the size of the vehicle, open or enclosed transport, the time of year, and how flexible your dates are. Spring is usually the priciest time to go north. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, not an estimate that changes later.
Is it cheaper to ship my car or drive it from Texas to Michigan?
Driving it is roughly 1,200 to 1,400 miles. Figure two long days on the road, at least one hotel night, gas, food, and the miles on your car. Add a flight if you're driving one car and someone has to come back. For a lot of people, shipping ends up costing about the same, and you get those days back.
Do I need to register my car in Michigan after moving from Texas?
Yes. New residents need to title and register the car at a Michigan Secretary of State office, and you'll need Michigan no-fault insurance before you can register. Michigan doesn't require a vehicle inspection. Check the Michigan SOS website for current requirements.
Can you ship a car to Michigan in the winter?
Yes. Carriers run to Michigan all winter. A big snowstorm can push delivery back a day or two, and your car will see road salt on an open trailer. If that worries you, ask about enclosed transport.
Do you pick up anywhere in Texas?
Yes. We pick up all over the state, including Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, El Paso, Corpus Christi, the Rio Grande Valley, and smaller towns in between.
Do you deliver to the Upper Peninsula?
Yes. We deliver everywhere in Michigan, from Detroit and Grand Rapids up to Traverse City, Marquette, and the rest of the U.P. Farther north costs a bit more and may take an extra day.
Can you ship my car from Michigan back to Texas?
Yes. A lot of our customers ship south in the fall and north in the spring. Just request a quote with your Michigan pickup and Texas delivery address.
Is my car insured during transport?
Yes. Every carrier we work with is required to carry active cargo insurance. Your vehicle's condition is documented on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the vehicle are not covered.
Do I have to pay upfront?
No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can either pay a small deposit and the remaining balance directly to the driver at delivery, or pay in full at that point so nothing is due at delivery.
