Illinois to Washington Auto Transport

Shipping a Car From Illinois to Washington

Chicago to Seattle is about 2,060 miles, almost entirely on I-90 across Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, and Idaho. Spokane is closer to 1,750. That's five long days of driving.

Seattle and Chicago trade a lot of tech and corporate talent. Engineers, product managers, and consultants move between the two for jobs at the big tech companies and the firms that serve them. We also ship for families relocating to Bellevue and the Eastside, students at the University of Washington, and Washingtonians moving to Chicago for big-city careers.

Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and $0 due at booking.

The Route

How Cars Get From Illinois to Washington

This is an I-90 route almost door to door. Trucks head northwest through Madison and La Crosse, across southern Minnesota and South Dakota, through Montana, over Lookout Pass into Idaho, and on to Spokane. From there, I-90 crosses Snoqualmie Pass into Seattle and the Eastside.

Some trucks take I-94 through the Twin Cities and North Dakota to join I-90 at Billings. Tacoma and Olympia are south of Seattle on I-5.

Along the Way

  • Chicago → Sioux Falls~570 mi
  • Sioux Falls → Billings~600 mi
  • Billings → Spokane~545 mi
  • Spokane → Seattle~280 mi

Approximate distances. The exact route depends on the carrier's other stops.

Timing

When to Ship Illinois to Washington

Mountain passes are the big factor on this route.

Mountain Winter

Snow on Lookout Pass, Montana's passes, and Snoqualmie Pass can close I-90 from November through March. Leave extra slack.

Summer Moving Season

June through August is busiest for tech relocations. Book a couple of weeks ahead.

Wildfire Season

Late summer smoke and fires can close roads in Montana and eastern Washington. Drivers reroute when needed.

Spring & Fall

Usually the smoothest time to ship.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Illinois to Washington?

Here's what moves the price on this cross-country route.

Distance

Spokane is about 1,750 miles from Chicago. Seattle and the Eastside are closer to 2,050.

A Straight Shot

I-90 runs nearly the whole way, which helps keep prices reasonable for a trip this long.

Delivery Area

Seattle suburbs are easy. Dense city neighborhoods and island homes need more planning.

Pass Conditions

When Snoqualmie or the Montana passes need chains, fewer drivers want the run, and winter quotes can climb.

Vehicle Size

Pickups and full-size SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost more to ship.

Open or Enclosed

Open is the standard. Enclosed keeps road debris off a nicer car on a long trip.

Your Quote Is Your Final Price

A cheap quote no driver will take just leaves your car sitting. Ours is priced to move, it's your final price, and $0 is due at booking.

Good to Know

Before You Ship & After You Arrive

A few Washington-specific things worth knowing.

Registering in Washington

New residents have 30 days to title and register at a vehicle licensing office. Washington doesn't require a safety inspection. Check dol.wa.gov for current requirements.

Tech Relocations

Starting at a Seattle or Eastside tech company? We'll time the delivery to your start date.

Island Deliveries

Bainbridge, Mercer Island, and the San Juans can involve a ferry or tight streets. We'll plan the delivery point with you.

Illinois Pickups

Chicago alleys, permit-only parking, high-rise garages, and tight streets in neighborhoods like Lincoln Park and Wicker Park can keep a big carrier off your block. If so, the driver will set up a nearby meeting spot, usually a lot just off I-90/94, I-55, I-57, I-80, I-88, or I-294.

The Process

How It Works

Simple, transparent, and nothing due until a carrier is on the way.

  1. 1

    Request Your Quote

Give us your Illinois pickup address, your Washington delivery address, the vehicle, and your dates. You get a final price, good for 7 days.

  2. 2

    Book With $0 Down

Nothing is due when you book. We match your vehicle with a vetted carrier that has room on a truck headed to Washington.

  3. 3

    Carrier Dispatched

Once a carrier is assigned, a deposit (or full payment, if you prefer) secures your spot. The driver inspects your car with you at pickup and notes its condition on the Bill of Lading.

  4. 4

    Delivered & Inspected

Look your car over with the driver in Washington, sign off, and pay any remaining balance directly to the driver by cash or check.

FAQ

Illinois to Washington Car Shipping FAQs

How long does it take to ship a car from Illinois to Washington?

Usually 5 to 7 days after pickup. Winter weather in the mountains can add a day or two.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Illinois to Washington?

It depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, vehicle size, open or enclosed transport, and the season. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, good for 7 days.

Can you deliver to a Seattle apartment?

Usually to a nearby spot rather than the building. Many Seattle streets are steep or tight, so the driver will coordinate a meeting point.

Does Washington require a vehicle inspection?

No. Washington has no safety inspection, and emissions testing ended in 2020.

Is it cheaper to ship or drive from Illinois to Washington?

Driving 2,000 miles over three mountain ranges means five days, four hotel nights, gas, and food. For most people, shipping costs less.

Can you ship a car from Washington back to Illinois?

Yes. Request a quote with your Washington pickup address and your Illinois delivery address. It's door-to-door either way.

Is my car insured during transport?

Yes. Every carrier we work with is required to carry active cargo insurance. Your car's condition is documented on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the vehicle aren't covered.

Do I have to pay upfront?

No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can pay a deposit and the rest to the driver at delivery by cash or check, or pay in full at that point.
