Shipping a Car From Minnesota to Michigan
Minneapolis to Detroit is about 695 miles, around the south end of Lake Michigan on I-94. Duluth to Marquette is around 305, Minneapolis to Kalamazoo about 555, Grand Rapids close to 590, St. Paul to Lansing roughly 625, Minneapolis to Ann Arbor about 655, and Traverse City around 720. Most cars arrive 1 to 3 days after pickup.
Minnesota to Michigan moves are usually job relocations to Detroit and Grand Rapids, students at Michigan and Michigan State, and families buying cabins up north. Lake Michigan sits in the way, so every trip goes around it. Winter on both sides of the lake takes the most planning.

The Route
How Cars Get From Minnesota to Michigan
Lower Michigan loads take I-94 across Wisconsin and around the bottom of Lake Michigan through Chicago. From there, I-94 runs straight to Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, and Detroit, and I-196 heads to Grand Rapids.
The Upper Peninsula is a different trip: US-2 east from Duluth across northern Wisconsin to Marquette. Carriers don't use the Lake Michigan ferries, so Traverse City is reached by land through Grand Rapids.
Along the Way

- Chicago → Detroit~285 mi

Timing
When to Ship Minnesota to Michigan
Winter on the Great Lakes sets the timing.
Minnesota Winter
From December through March, snow and deep cold can delay a Minnesota pickup a day or more. If a storm is coming, we'll plan around it.
Lake-Effect Snow
West Michigan and the U.P. get heavy lake-effect snow. It can slow deliveries a day.
Up North Summer
Traverse City and the lakeshore fill up in July. Weekday delivery is easier.
Fall
Usually the smoothest window.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Minnesota to Michigan?
Here's what affects price on a Minnesota to Michigan shipment.
Lower Michigan vs. the U.P.
Lower Michigan goes through Chicago. The U.P. is reached across northern Wisconsin.
Pickup Location
Duluth is closest for U.P. trips. The Twin Cities are best for Lower Michigan.
Rural Delivery
Cabins and lake roads up north often mean meeting in town.
Tolls
Illinois and Indiana tolls are built into your quote.
Open or Enclosed
Enclosed keeps winter salt off a nicer car.
Busy Corridor
I-94 carries a lot of trucks, which keeps availability good.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
Your quote is your final price, good for 7 days, with nothing due until a carrier is assigned.

Before You Ship & After You Arrive
What to know before your car heads to Michigan.
Registering in Michigan
New residents should title and register with the Secretary of State as soon as they move. Michigan doesn't require a safety or emissions inspection. Check michigan.gov/sos for current requirements.
Cabins Up North
Two-track roads and steep lake drives aren't safe for a loaded carrier. Plan to meet in town or on a paved road.
Campus Deliveries
Ann Arbor and East Lansing are packed on home football weekends. Pick a weekday if you can.
Duluth, North Shore, and Lake Country Pickups
Duluth's hillside streets are steep and icy in winter, and the North Shore, Brainerd lakes, and Iron Range are a long way off the interstate on two-lane roads. Fewer trucks run that far north, so a flexible window helps, and cabin roads usually mean meeting the driver in town.
