Connecticut to Virginia Auto Transport
Shipping a Car From Connecticut to Virginia
Hartford to Arlington is about 340 miles down I-95, and Richmond is around 440. Norfolk and Newport News are closer to 520. It's one long day of driving.
This is one of the most important submarine routes in the country. Electric Boat in Groton and Newport News Shipbuilding build Virginia-class submarines together, so engineers and shipbuilders move between the two yards all the time, and sub crews shift between Groton and Naval Station Norfolk. We also ship for people taking federal and contractor jobs in Northern Virginia and students at UVA and William & Mary.
Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and $0 due at booking.

The Route
How Cars Get From Connecticut to Virginia
Most carriers come down I-95 through New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland and around the Beltway into Northern Virginia, then continue south to Richmond. From there, I-64 runs east to Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach.
Western Virginia is usually reached on I-84 and I-81 down the Shenandoah Valley to Roanoke and Charlottesville. Some Hampton Roads loads cut down the Eastern Shore on US-13 and cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Timing
When to Ship Connecticut to Virginia
Navy orders and East Coast traffic shape this route.
Summer PCS Season
May through August is the peak for Norfolk, Newport News, Quantico, and Pentagon moves. Book as soon as you have orders.
Hurricane Season
June through November can affect Hampton Roads. Keep a little slack in your dates.
Beltway and Tunnel Traffic
The Beltway and the Hampton Roads tunnels back up badly at rush hour. Drivers plan around it.
Winter
Nor'easters can shut down I-95 for a day. Short routes usually just shift a day.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Connecticut to Virginia?
Here's what affects the price on this route.
Distance
Northern Virginia is about 280 to 340 miles from Connecticut. Hampton Roads is closer to 530.
Short-Haul Pricing
Shorter trips cost more per mile than cross-country ones, since loading and unloading take the same time either way.
Tolls and Tunnels
Bridges, the NJ Turnpike, and Hampton Roads tunnels are part of the price. We build them into the quote.
Delivery Area
Suburban addresses are easy. Arlington high-rises, Old Town, and base housing usually need a meeting spot.
Vehicle Size
Pickups and full-size SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost more to ship.
Date Flexibility
A flexible day or two usually gets you the best price.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
Tolls and tunnels are already built in. The price we quote is the price you pay, with $0 due at booking.

Before You Ship & After You Arrive
A few Virginia-specific things worth knowing.
Registering in Virginia
New residents have 30 days to title and register with Virginia DMV. Virginia requires an annual safety inspection, and cars in Northern Virginia also need emissions testing. Check dmv.virginia.gov for current requirements.
Shipyard Moves
Moving between Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding? Tell us your start date and we'll plan around it.
Moving With the Navy
We ship for submarine sailors, Coast Guard members, and families moving from Groton and New London to Norfolk, Little Creek, Portsmouth, and Coast Guard units in Hampton Roads.
Connecticut Pickups
Narrow streets in older parts of Hartford and New Haven, shoreline beach roads, and condo or HOA rules in Fairfield County can keep a carrier off your street. If so, the driver will set up a nearby meeting spot, usually a lot just off I-95, I-84, or I-91.
