Shipping a Car From Alabama to Virginia
Virginia is closer than it looks on a map. Birmingham to Roanoke is about 515 miles, Richmond is around 700, and Norfolk is close to 800. Northern Virginia sits in between, and it has some of the worst traffic on the East Coast.
This is one of the strongest defense routes we run. Huntsville and Northern Virginia share an enormous number of contractors, Army program offices, and government jobs, and people move between them all the time. We also ship cars for sailors at Naval Station Norfolk, service members at Quantico, Fort Belvoir, and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and students at Virginia Tech, UVA, and JMU.
Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and $0 due at booking.

The Route
How Cars Get From Alabama to Virginia
For western Virginia and the D.C. suburbs, most trucks go through Chattanooga and Knoxville and up I-81 through the Shenandoah Valley. Roanoke and Blacksburg are right on it. Northern Virginia deliveries leave I-81 for I-66 east toward Arlington and Fairfax.
Richmond and Hampton Roads are usually reached the other way, on I-85 through Atlanta and the Carolinas, then I-64 east to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The bridge-tunnels in Hampton Roads can back up badly, so the driver will call ahead with a realistic arrival time.

Timing
When to Ship Alabama to Virginia
Military calendars and coastal weather shape this route most.
Summer PCS Season
The busiest time for military moves to Norfolk, Quantico, and Fort Belvoir. Request your quote a couple of weeks before your report date.
Hurricane Season
June through November can affect the Alabama Gulf Coast and Hampton Roads. Carriers wait out storms before moving.
Winter on I-81
Snow and ice in the Shenandoah Valley and the mountains can slow trucks for a day.
Spring & Fall
Usually the easiest time to ship, though college move-in and game days at Virginia Tech and UVA can be busy.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Alabama to Virginia?
Here's what makes the biggest difference in price on this route.
Distance
Huntsville to Roanoke is under 500 miles. Mobile to Norfolk is around 900.
Region of Virginia
The I-81 corridor is easy to reach. Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads mean more traffic and more planning.
Season
Summer PCS demand and hurricane season both affect timing. Spring and fall are smoothest.
Open or Enclosed
Open is the standard. Enclosed protects classics and luxury cars from weather and road debris.
Vehicle Size
Full-size trucks and SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost a bit more to ship.
Date Flexibility
I-81 and I-85 are busy truck corridors. A flexible window helps us catch one already headed north.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
We don't quote low and raise the price once your car is waiting. The number we give you is the number you pay, with $0 due at booking.
