Shipping a Car From California to Vermont
Los Angeles to Burlington is about 3,000 miles. It's one of the longest routes we run, ending on two-lane roads through the Green Mountains. Plan on a full week of driving if you do it yourself.
Most of the Californians we ship for are trading city life for small-town Vermont: remote workers settling around Burlington, families buying farmhouses, and skiers who want to be close to Stowe or Killington. We also ship for students at UVM, Middlebury, and Norwich, and Air National Guard members heading to the F-35 wing in South Burlington.
Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and $0 due at booking.

The Route
How Cars Get From California to Vermont
Many carriers come across the northern route: I-80 to Chicago and I-90 along Lake Erie and the New York Thruway to Albany. From there, I-87 and the Champlain Valley lead to Burlington, and US-7 runs down the west side of the state through Rutland and Bennington.
Southern Vermont is often served on I-91 from Hartford, and Montpelier and Stowe are off I-89. Vermont loads are usually combined with New England stops, since few trucks run all the way from California to Vermont alone.

Timing
When to Ship California to Vermont
Vermont's seasons are a big part of the plan on this route.
Winter
Snow in the Rockies, lake-effect snow on I-90, and Green Mountain storms can slow trucks from December through March.
Mud Season
In April and early May, Vermont's dirt roads turn soft and some close to heavy trucks. Plan to meet on a paved road.
Fall Foliage
Late September and October bring big crowds to Stowe and the scenic routes. Weekday deliveries go much smoother.
Summer
Usually the easiest time to ship. Late August gets busy with UVM and Middlebury move-ins.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From California to Vermont?
This is a long route to a rural state. Here's what affects the price.
Distance
At roughly 3,000 miles, this is one of the longest routes we run.
Rural Delivery
Burlington and the I-89 corridor are simple. Dirt roads, steep driveways, and hill towns usually need a meeting spot.
Season
Winter and mud season add time. Summer and early fall are usually the best value.
Open or Enclosed
Open is the standard. Enclosed keeps road salt and winter grime off a California car.
Vehicle Size
Pickups and full-size SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost more to ship.
Date Flexibility
Fewer trucks run all the way to Vermont. A flexible window gives us more options.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
We don't quote low and then come back asking for more. Your quote is your final price, and $0 is due at booking.

Before You Ship & After You Arrive
A few Vermont-specific things worth knowing.
Registering in Vermont
New residents register with the Vermont DMV and pay a purchase and use tax, with credit for tax paid elsewhere in some cases. Vermont requires an annual safety inspection. Check dmv.vermont.gov for current requirements.
Dirt Roads and Driveways
Much of rural Vermont is gravel and steep. A car carrier usually can't reach the house, so the driver will meet you on a nearby paved road.
Get Winter-Ready
Coming from California? Vermont winters call for real snow tires and a strong battery.
Plan for a Gap
With 7 to 10 days in transit, you'll arrive first. Budget for a rental or a ride for the first week.

It depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, vehicle size, open or enclosed transport, and the season. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, good for 7 days.
Can the truck reach my house on a dirt road?

Yes. Vermont requires an annual safety inspection, and you'll pay a purchase and use tax when you register.

Driving 3,000 miles means about a week, six hotel nights, gas, food, and tolls. For most people, shipping costs less.

No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can pay a deposit and the rest to the driver at delivery by cash or check, or pay in full at that point.
