Los Angeles to Albuquerque is about 790 miles, east on I-40 through Barstow, Kingman, and Flagstaff and across the high desert. It's one very long day or two easy ones.
There's a strong science and defense connection on this route. Engineers and scientists move between Lawrence Livermore and Sandia and Los Alamos, test teams go from Edwards and China Lake to White Sands, and Space Force and Air Force members head from Los Angeles AFB and Vandenberg to Kirtland. We also ship for film and TV crews working in Albuquerque's studios, and for families moving to Santa Fe and Las Cruces.

Timing
When to Ship California to New Mexico
Short route, but high-desert weather and a few big events still matter.
Winter on I-40
Snow near Flagstaff and at the Continental Divide near Gallup can close I-40 for a few hours. Leave some room from December through February.
Monsoon Season
July through September, afternoon storms and dust can slow traffic on I-40 and I-10.
Balloon Fiesta
Albuquerque fills up for the first two weeks of October. Deliveries on the north side go easier outside fiesta dates.
Spring
Wind season in New Mexico, but generally easy to book and quick to deliver.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From California to New Mexico?
This is a shorter route, so pricing works a little differently.
Distance
Western New Mexico is about 650 miles from LA. Eastern New Mexico and Los Alamos are closer to 1,000.
Short-Haul Pricing
Shorter trips cost more per mile than cross-country ones, since loading and unloading take the same time either way.
Delivery Area
Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces are on main routes. Taos, Los Alamos, the Four Corners, and rural towns take more planning.
Open or Enclosed
Open is the standard. Enclosed is worth it for classic cars and lowriders.
Vehicle Size
Pickups and full-size SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost more to ship.
Date Flexibility
Lots of trucks run I-40. A flexible day or two helps us catch one already heading east.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
Your quote is your final price, even on a shorter haul. It's good for 7 days, and $0 is due at booking.

Before You Ship & After You Arrive
A few New Mexico-specific things worth knowing.
Registering in New Mexico
New residents have 30 days to register with the MVD. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN inspection, and cars in Bernalillo County (Albuquerque) need an emissions test. Check mvd.newmexico.gov for current requirements.
Moving for the Labs
Starting at Sandia or Los Alamos? Tell us your start date and we'll plan the delivery around it. Los Alamos is up a mountain road, so we may meet you in town.
Moving With the Military
We ship for Guardians, airmen, soldiers, and test teams moving from California bases to Kirtland, Holloman, Cannon, and White Sands Missile Range.
California Pickups
Tight streets, permit parking, and big apartment complexes in LA, San Francisco, and San Diego can keep a carrier off your block. If so, the driver will set up a nearby meeting spot.

FAQ
California to New Mexico Car Shipping FAQs
How long does it take to ship a car from California to New Mexico?
Usually 2 to 4 days after pickup. Albuquerque and western New Mexico are on the faster end.
How much does it cost to ship a car from California to New Mexico?
It depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, vehicle size, open or enclosed transport, and the season. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, good for 7 days.
Do you ship cars for people moving from Livermore to Los Alamos or Sandia?
Yes. It's a common move on this route. Tell us your start date when you request a quote.
Do I need an inspection to register my car in New Mexico?
Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN inspection, and cars in Bernalillo County need an emissions test. Check with the New Mexico MVD.
Why ship instead of driving from LA to Albuquerque?
It's a very long day behind the wheel. If you're moving two cars, flying in, or don't want the desert drive, shipping is the easier choice.
Can you ship a car from New Mexico back to California?
Yes. Request a quote with your New Mexico pickup address and your California delivery address. It's door-to-door either way.
Is my car insured during transport?
Yes. Every carrier we work with is required to carry active cargo insurance. Your car's condition is documented on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the vehicle aren't covered.
Do I have to pay upfront?
No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can pay a deposit and the rest to the driver at delivery by cash or check, or pay in full at that point.
