Alabama to Iowa Auto Transport

Shipping a Car From Alabama to Iowa

Birmingham to Des Moines is roughly 870 miles. It's a long day and a half of driving north through Memphis and St. Louis, and the last few hours are a lot of corn and not a lot of anything else.

Iowa moves tend to be about careers and family. Des Moines is a big insurance and financial services town, Cedar Rapids has a large aerospace employer that plenty of Huntsville engineers know well, and Iowa City and Ames pull in students every fall. We also ship a fair number of cars for people moving back to Iowa to be closer to family.

Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and nothing due until a carrier is assigned to your car.

The Route

How Cars Get From Alabama to Iowa

Trucks usually leave Alabama on I-22 to Memphis and follow I-55 north to St. Louis. From there, eastern Iowa deliveries head up along the Mississippi toward the Quad Cities and run I-80 west to Iowa City and Des Moines.

Some carriers go through Kansas City instead and come up I-35 into Des Moines and Ames. Western Iowa deliveries to Council Bluffs and Sioux City usually ride I-29 north from Kansas City. Iowa has a lot of small towns between the interstates, and we deliver to them too. They just take a little more planning.

Timing

When to Ship Alabama to Iowa

Iowa weather is the biggest wild card on this route.

Winter

Blizzards and whiteouts can close stretches of I-80 and I-35 a few times each winter. Leave room on your delivery date from December through February.

Spring

Flooding along the Mississippi and severe storms can reroute trucks. Delays are usually short, but they happen.

Summer

The busiest moving season. Request your quote a week or two out if your dates are set.

Back to School

Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI move-in weeks in August fill trucks fast. Book early for a student.

Pricing

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Alabama to Iowa?

Here's what moves the price on this route.

Distance

Birmingham to the Quad Cities is about 760 miles. Sioux City is closer to 1,050.

Metro vs. Small Town

Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City are easy to schedule. Rural addresses far from I-80 or I-35 may take longer.

Season

Winter weather adds time and risk. Summer adds demand. Spring and fall are usually the easiest to book.

Open or Enclosed

Open is the standard and the most affordable. Enclosed keeps your car clear of winter salt and spring road grime.

Vehicle Size

Pickup trucks and SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost a little more to ship.

Date Flexibility

A wider pickup window lets us match your car with a truck already heading into the Midwest.

Your Quote Is Your Final Price

Your quote is your final price. It's good for 7 days, there are no hidden fees, and you pay nothing at booking.

Good to Know

Before You Ship & After You Arrive

A few Iowa-specific things worth knowing.

Registering in Iowa

New residents generally have 30 days to title and register at their county treasurer's office. Iowa doesn't require safety or emissions inspections. Check iowadot.gov for current requirements.

Rural Deliveries

Gravel roads and narrow farm lanes aren't built for a full car carrier. If yours is one, the driver will arrange to meet you in town or at the nearest paved spot.

Winter Prep

Iowa winters are a big change from Alabama. A healthy battery and good tires matter more than you'd think on a 10-degree morning.

Shipping a Car to a Student

We ship cars to Iowa City, Ames, and Cedar Falls every August. Someone just needs to meet the driver to check the car and sign for it.

The Process

How It Works

Simple, transparent, and nothing due until a carrier is on the way.

  1. 1

    Request Your Quote

Give us your Alabama pickup address, your Iowa delivery address, the vehicle, and your dates. You get a final price, good for 7 days.

  2. 2

    Book With $0 Down

Nothing is due when you book. We match your vehicle with a vetted carrier that has room on a truck headed to Iowa.

  3. 3

    Carrier Dispatched

Once a carrier is assigned, a deposit (or full payment, if you prefer) secures your spot. The driver inspects your car with you at pickup and notes its condition on the Bill of Lading.

  4. 4

    Delivered & Inspected

Look your car over with the driver in Iowa, sign off, and pay any remaining balance directly to the driver by cash or check.
