Shipping a Car From Alabama to Maine
Birmingham to Portland, Maine is about 1,280 miles. That's the whole Appalachian corridor, the New York metro, and all of southern New England before you even reach the Maine Turnpike. Most people would rather fly into Portland and let a truck handle that.
Moves from Alabama to Maine are often about lifestyle. Some people are trading southern summers for a coastal town. Others are heading to the shipyards in Bath and Kittery, students at Bowdoin, Bates, Colby, or UMaine, or families moving back to be close to relatives. We also ship cars for people who split the year between Alabama and a summer place in Maine.
Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and $0 due at booking.

The Route
How Cars Get From Alabama to Maine
Most trucks head up I-81 through the Shenandoah Valley and Pennsylvania, then cut east on I-84 through Hartford and up through Massachusetts to I-95. Once they cross the Piscataqua River bridge into Kittery, the Maine Turnpike takes them to Portland, Lewiston, and Augusta.
Past Augusta, it gets quiet fast. Bangor is about two more hours up I-95, and Down East towns, the western mountains, and Aroostook County are a long way from any interstate. We'll get your car there, but expect a little more lead time for anything north of Bangor.
Along the Way
- Birmingham → Knoxville~255 mi
- Knoxville → Harrisburg~510 mi
- Harrisburg → Hartford~315 mi
- Hartford → Portland, ME~200 mi
Approximate distances. The exact route depends on the carrier's other stops.
Timing
When to Ship Alabama to Maine
Maine has four seasons, and every one of them affects shipping a little differently.
Winter
Maine winters are long and snowy, and nor'easters can slow trucks for a day or two. Expect a wider delivery window from December through March.
Mud Season
In early spring, many Maine roads are posted for weight limits while the ground thaws. Heavy trucks may not be allowed on yours, so plan a meeting spot.
Summer
Maine's busy season. Coastal towns fill up with visitors and summer residents, so book early for a June or July delivery.
Fall
Often the best time to ship. Good weather, fewer tourists, and normal demand.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Alabama to Maine?
Here's what moves the price on this route.
Distance
Huntsville to Portland is about 1,240 miles. Northern and Down East Maine add a lot more.
Southern vs. Northern Maine
Portland, Lewiston, and Augusta are on the main truck lanes. Bangor and beyond take more time to schedule.
Season
Winter and mud season make some deliveries harder. Summer demand pushes prices up on coastal routes.
Open or Enclosed
Open is the standard. Enclosed keeps salt, sand, and slush off a nicer car through a New England winter.
Vehicle Size
Full-size trucks and SUVs, which are popular in Maine, cost a bit more to ship than sedans.
Road Access
Dirt roads, steep driveways, and posted roads may mean meeting the truck in town. Tell us about your road when you request a quote.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
Long northeast routes are where low-ball quotes tend to fall apart. Ours doesn't. The price we quote is the price you pay, with $0 due at booking.

A few Maine-specific things worth knowing.
Registering in Maine
In Maine, registration usually starts at your town or city office, where you pay the excise tax, then finishes with the BMV. New residents generally have 30 days, and Maine requires an annual safety inspection. Check maine.gov/sos/bmv for current rules.
Posted Roads in Spring
During spring thaw, many rural roads are posted to keep heavy trucks off. If yours is posted, we'll plan a meeting spot on a road that isn't.

We ship cars for workers and families heading to the shipyards in Bath and Kittery. Give us your start date and we'll plan around it.

FAQ
Alabama to Maine Car Shipping FAQs
How long does it take to ship a car from Alabama to Maine?
Usually 4 to 7 days after pickup. Southern Maine is on the faster end. Northern Maine, Down East towns, and winter weather can add time.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Alabama to Maine?
It depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, vehicle size, open or enclosed transport, and the season. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, good for 7 days.
Can you deliver to rural Maine?
Yes. We deliver anywhere in Maine. If your road is unpaved, steep, or posted for weight limits, the driver will meet you at a nearby spot in town.
What is mud season, and will it affect my delivery?
Mud season is the spring thaw, usually March and April. Many towns post weight limits on local roads to protect them, so a big truck may need to meet you on a main road instead.
Can you ship my car to Maine for the summer and back in the fall?
Yes. Each direction is booked as its own shipment. Book the summer trip early, since coastal Maine gets busy in June and July.
Can you ship a car from Maine back to Alabama?
Yes. Request a quote with your Maine pickup address and your Alabama delivery address. It's door-to-door either way.
Is my car insured during transport?
Yes. Every carrier we work with must carry active cargo insurance. Your car's condition is recorded on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the car aren't covered.
Do I have to pay upfront?
No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can pay a deposit and the balance to the driver at delivery by cash or check, or pay in full at that point.
