Shipping a Car From Alabama to South Dakota
Birmingham to Sioux Falls is about 1,140 miles, and Rapid City is another 350 west across the prairie. That's two long days to Sioux Falls and most of a third to the Black Hills.
Sioux Falls is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Upper Midwest, with big healthcare and banking employers and no state income tax. We ship cars for families relocating there, airmen and families reporting to Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, students at South Dakota State and USD, and people moving to the Black Hills for the outdoors.
Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and $0 due until a carrier is assigned.

How Cars Get From Alabama to South Dakota
The usual path runs northwest through Memphis and St. Louis to Kansas City, then north on I-29 through Omaha and Sioux City straight into Sioux Falls. Brookings and Watertown are farther up I-29.
West River is a different trip. Rapid City, Ellsworth AFB, and the Black Hills are about 350 miles west of Sioux Falls on I-90. Pierre and Aberdeen sit well off the interstates, and many ranch and small-town addresses are on gravel roads where the driver will meet you in town.

Timing
When to Ship Alabama to South Dakota
Plains weather and one very big rally shape this route most.
Sturgis Rally
In early August, hundreds of thousands of motorcycles fill the Black Hills. Avoid delivering to Rapid City or Sturgis that week if you can.
Winter
Blizzards and high winds can close I-90 and I-29 for a day or more. Expect a wider window from November through March.
Spring Storms
Hail and severe storms are common in late spring and early summer. Enclosed transport is worth a look for nicer cars.
Fall
Usually the easiest time to ship. Good weather and steady truck availability before winter.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Alabama to South Dakota?
Here's what affects the price on this route.
Distance
Huntsville to Sioux Falls is about 1,070 miles. Rapid City is closer to 1,500.
East River vs. West River
Sioux Falls and Brookings are easy to reach. Rapid City, Pierre, and ranch country take more planning.
Fewer Direct Trucks
South Dakota is a smaller market, so a flexible pickup window helps us find a truck already heading that way.
Season
Winter, spring hail, and Sturgis week all affect timing. Fall is usually smoothest.
Open or Enclosed
Open is the standard. Enclosed protects your car from hail and winter grime.
Vehicle Size
Pickups and SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost a bit more to ship.

A few South Dakota-specific things worth knowing.
Registering in South Dakota

Moving With the Military
We ship vehicles for airmen and families reporting to Ellsworth AFB. Share your report date and we'll plan around it.
Ranch & Rural Deliveries
Gravel roads and long ranch driveways can't fit a full car carrier. The driver will meet you at the nearest paved spot in town.
Get Winter-Ready
South Dakota winters are cold and windy. A strong battery and good tires matter more than you'd expect coming from Alabama.

It depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, vehicle size, open or enclosed transport, and the season. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, good for 7 days.
Do you ship cars for military moves to Ellsworth AFB?
Yes. We regularly ship for airmen and families heading to Ellsworth. Give us your report date when you request a quote.
Should I avoid shipping to the Black Hills during Sturgis?
If you can, yes. The rally in early August brings huge crowds and traffic to Rapid City and Sturgis. A week before or after is much easier.

Yes. Request a quote with your South Dakota pickup address and your Alabama delivery address. Every shipment is door-to-door.

Yes. Every carrier we work with is required to carry active cargo insurance. Your car's condition is documented on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the vehicle aren't covered.
Do I have to pay upfront?
No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can pay a deposit and the rest to the driver at delivery by cash or check, or pay in full at that point.
