Shipping a Car From Alabama to Minnesota
Birmingham to Minneapolis is about 1,075 miles, roughly as far north as you can go without leaving the Midwest. It's two full days of driving through Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and the temperature change on the way can be dramatic.
Most Minnesota moves we handle are career moves. The Twin Cities are home to a long list of major corporate headquarters, and Rochester has one of the biggest medical employers in the country. We also ship cars to students at the University of Minnesota and to people heading home to family after years down south.
Door-to-door, a final-price quote, and $0 due at booking.

The Route
How Cars Get From Alabama to Minnesota
Most trucks run I-65 north to Indianapolis and the Chicago area, then follow I-94 through Milwaukee, Madison, and western Wisconsin into the Twin Cities. Rochester deliveries usually leave I-90 in southern Minnesota and head north on US-52.
Some carriers take a western route through St. Louis and up I-35 through Iowa instead, which avoids Chicago traffic. Duluth and the North Shore are about two and a half hours past Minneapolis on I-35. Lake country and northern Minnesota are farther from the main lanes, so they take a bit more planning.
Along the Way
- Birmingham → Indianapolis~480 mi
- Indianapolis → Chicago~185 mi
- Chicago → Madison~150 mi
- Madison → Minneapolis~270 mi
Approximate distances. The exact route depends on the carrier's other stops.
Timing
When to Ship Alabama to Minnesota
Minnesota winters are the main thing to plan around on this route.
Winter
Real cold, often below zero, plus snow from November into April. Trucks still run, but delivery windows get wider.
Spring Load Limits
Minnesota restricts heavy trucks on many roads during the spring thaw. Rural deliveries may need a meeting spot on a main road.
Summer
The busiest moving season and the best weather for it. Request your quote a couple of weeks ahead.
Fall
Good weather and steady truck availability. A smart time to ship before winter sets in.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Alabama to Minnesota?
Here's what moves the price on this route.
Distance
Birmingham to Rochester is about 1,000 miles. Mobile to Minneapolis is over 1,300.
Metro vs. Up North
The Twin Cities, Rochester, and St. Cloud are easy to schedule. Lake country and northern Minnesota take longer.
Season
Deep winter and spring load limits both affect timing. Late spring through fall is easiest.
Open or Enclosed
Open is the standard. Enclosed keeps winter salt and grime off a nicer car.
Vehicle Size
Full-size trucks and SUVs take more trailer space and cost a bit more to ship than sedans.
Date Flexibility
A flexible pickup window lets us catch a truck already heading to the Upper Midwest.
