Shipping a Car From Alabama to Illinois
Birmingham to Chicago is about 660 miles, and nearly all of it is one road: I-65, straight north through Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis. It's an easy drive on paper. Then you hit the Borman Expressway and the Dan Ryan.
Most of the Alabama cars we ship to Illinois go to Chicago and the suburbs for job moves, transfers, and people moving closer to family. We also ship cars to students at the University of Illinois, Northwestern, and UChicago, and to service members at Naval Station Great Lakes and Scott Air Force Base.
Door-to-door, with a final-price quote and $0 due at booking.

The Route
How Cars Get From Alabama to Illinois
This is one of the straightest routes out of Alabama. Trucks take I-65 north from Birmingham through Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis, then cross into Illinois near Gary. Huntsville pickups join I-65 near Athens. From Mobile, it's I-65 from one end to the other.
Central and southern Illinois work a little differently. Deliveries to Champaign, Springfield, Peoria, or the Metro East usually leave I-65 at Nashville and take I-24 to I-57, which runs straight up the middle of the state.
Downtown Chicago has tight streets, lots of one-ways, and strict loading rules. If your building doesn't have room for a big truck, the driver will call ahead and meet you at a nearby lot.

Timing
When to Ship Alabama to Illinois
Chicago winters are the big thing to plan around, but not the only one.
Winter
Lake-effect snow and cold snaps can slow trucks in northern Illinois from December through March. Keep a little flex in your delivery date.
Summer
Peak moving season and peak construction season on I-65. Book a week or two ahead if your dates are set.
Late August
College move-in at UIUC, Northwestern, and UChicago. If you're shipping a car to a student, get it on the calendar early.
Hurricane Season
June through November on Alabama's Gulf Coast. A storm near Mobile can delay a pickup until it's safe.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Alabama to Illinois?
Here's what makes the biggest difference in price on this route.
Distance
Huntsville to Chicago is under 600 miles. Mobile to Chicago is over 900.
City vs. Suburbs
Suburban addresses with room for a big truck are the easiest. Downtown high-rises usually need a nearby meeting spot.
Season
Winter weather and summer demand both affect price and timing on this route.
Open or Enclosed
Open is the standard. Enclosed is worth a look in winter if you'd rather your car not arrive coated in road salt.
Vehicle Size
Full-size trucks and SUVs take more trailer space than sedans, so they cost a bit more to ship.
Date Flexibility
I-65 is a busy truck corridor. A flexible pickup window lets us place your car on one already making the run.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
We don't quote low and raise the price once your car is waiting. The number we give you is the number you pay, and nothing is due when you book.

Before You Ship & After You Arrive
A few Illinois-specific things worth knowing.
Registering in Illinois
New residents have 30 days to title and register with the Illinois Secretary of State, and cars in the Chicago and Metro East areas may need an emissions test. Check ilsos.gov for current requirements.
Road Salt
Illinois uses a lot of salt in winter. If your car rides open, give it a good wash and an undercarriage rinse after delivery.
Downtown Chicago Deliveries
High-rises, one-way streets, and loading-zone rules make curbside delivery tough downtown. The driver will coordinate a nearby lot or safe loading spot with you.
Moving With the Military
We ship cars for sailors and families at Naval Station Great Lakes and airmen at Scott Air Force Base near Belleville.

FAQ
Alabama to Illinois Car Shipping FAQs
How long does it take to ship a car from Alabama to Illinois?
Usually 2 to 4 days after pickup. Winter weather and Chicago traffic can add a little time.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Alabama to Illinois?
It depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, vehicle size, open or enclosed transport, and the season. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, good for 7 days.
Can you deliver to downtown Chicago?
Yes. Because of parking and loading restrictions downtown, the driver may meet you at a nearby lot or safe loading spot rather than directly in front of your building. They'll call ahead to coordinate.
Should I worry about road salt during a winter shipment?
On an open carrier, your car may pick up some road spray in winter. A wash after delivery takes care of it. If you want your car fully covered, choose enclosed transport.
Can you ship a car to a student at the University of Illinois or Northwestern?
Yes. Book a couple of weeks before move-in, and make sure someone can meet the driver to look the car over and sign for it.
Can you ship a car from Illinois back to Alabama?
Yes. Request a quote with your Illinois pickup address and your Alabama delivery address. It's door-to-door either way.
Is my car insured during transport?
Yes. Every carrier we work with must carry active cargo insurance. Your car's condition is noted on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the vehicle aren't covered.
Do I have to pay upfront?
No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can pay a deposit and the remaining balance to the driver at delivery by cash or check, or pay in full at that point.
