Shipping a Car From Alabama to Arizona
It's about 1,700 miles from Birmingham to Phoenix. That's three long days of driving through Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and New Mexico, or most of a week if you take your time. Most people we talk to would rather fly out and have the car show up a few days later.
A lot of this route is people trading Alabama humidity for desert heat: retirees heading for the Phoenix suburbs, families moving for work, and snowbirds who spend October through April in the Valley. We also move cars for service members reporting to Luke Air Force Base, Davis-Monthan, and Fort Huachuca.
Every shipment is door-to-door. You get a final-price quote, and nothing is due until a carrier is assigned to your car.

The Route
How Cars Get From Alabama to Arizona
There are two main ways across. The southern route runs I-20 west through Jackson, Shreveport, and Dallas, then joins I-10 in West Texas and follows it through El Paso and Tucson into Phoenix. Most carriers use it from fall through spring because it stays out of the snow.
The northern route takes I-22 to Memphis and I-40 across Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, then drops down from Flagstaff on I-17. It can make sense for pickups around Huntsville and the Shoals, especially in summer. Cars coming from Mobile or the Wiregrass usually ride I-10 the whole way.
Along the Way
- Birmingham → Jackson, MS~240 mi
- Jackson → Dallas~400 mi
- Dallas → El Paso~635 mi
- El Paso → Tucson~320 mi
- Tucson → Phoenix~115 mi
Approximate distances. The exact route depends on the carrier's other stops.
Timing
When to Ship Alabama to Arizona
Arizona's busy season runs opposite to most of the country. Here's how the year usually plays out.
Fall (Oct–Dec)
Snowbirds head to Phoenix and Tucson, so trucks going into Arizona fill up. Get your quote in 2 to 4 weeks early.
Spring (Mar–May)
The snowbirds head home and trucks leaving Arizona get busy. Shipping into Arizona is usually easier to book now.
Summer
Phoenix often tops 110°F. Trucks still run, but check your battery, tires, and coolant, and be ready on time at delivery.
Storms
I-10 rarely sees snow, but winter storms near Flagstaff can slow I-40. Alabama's Gulf Coast has hurricane season June through November.
Pricing
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Alabama to Arizona?
There's no flat rate for this route. These are the things that move the price up or down.
Direction & Season
Shipping into Arizona in the fall competes with the snowbird rush and usually costs more than the same trip in late spring or summer.
Distance
Mobile to Tucson is the short end, around 1,540 miles. Montgomery or Dothan to the East Valley is closer to 1,800.
Pickup Location
Addresses near I-20, I-65, or I-10 are the easiest to schedule. Rural pickups in the Black Belt or the north Alabama hills can take a little longer to match.
Open or Enclosed
Open transport is what most people pick and what most trucks on this route are. Enclosed costs more but keeps the car out of desert dust and road grit.
Vehicle Size
A full-size truck or SUV takes more room and weight on the trailer than a sedan, so it costs more to ship.
Running Condition
If the car doesn't run, it needs a carrier with a winch. Tell us up front so the price you're quoted is the price you pay.
Your Quote Is Your Final Price
Some companies quote low to get the booking, then raise the price once your car is waiting on a truck. We don't. The number we give you is what you pay, and nothing is due when you book.

Before You Ship & After You Arrive
A few things that are specific to this route.
Registering in Arizona
Once you're an Arizona resident, you'll title and register your car with ADOT's Motor Vehicle Division. Out-of-state vehicles usually need a quick Level I inspection (a VIN check), and cars registered in the Phoenix or Tucson areas may need an emissions test. Check azdot.gov for current rules.
Gated Communities & HOAs
A lot of Phoenix-area neighborhoods are gated or don't allow big trucks. Send us gate codes or a nearby meeting spot, like a grocery store parking lot, and the driver will plan around it.
Snowbird Round Trips
Only wintering in Arizona? Tell us when you plan to head home and we'll quote the spring trip back to Alabama too, so you're not scrambling in March.
Moving With the Military
We ship cars for service members heading to Luke AFB in Glendale, Davis-Monthan in Tucson, Fort Huachuca, and MCAS Yuma. Share your report date and we'll work around it as closely as carrier schedules allow.

FAQ
Alabama to Arizona Car Shipping FAQs
How long does it take to ship a car from Alabama to Arizona?
Usually 4 to 7 days once the car is picked up. Mobile to Tucson is on the quicker end. Pickups in north Alabama or rural areas, or deliveries outside Phoenix and Tucson, can add a day or two.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Alabama to Arizona?
It depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, the size of your vehicle, open or enclosed transport, and the time of year. Fall is the most expensive time to ship into Arizona because of snowbird demand. Request a free quote and you'll get a final price, good for 7 days.
Is it cheaper to drive or ship a car from Alabama to Arizona?
Driving 1,700 miles means three days of gas, two or three hotel nights, meals, time off work, and a lot of wear on your car. Once you add it up, shipping often lands in the same range, and you get those days back.
Will the Arizona heat hurt my car during shipping?
Not in transit. Your car rides on the trailer the same way it would sit in a parking lot. Make sure the battery is healthy and the tires are properly inflated, and don't leave anything heat-sensitive inside.
Can I ship my car to Arizona for the winter and back in the spring?
Yes, and lots of people do. Each direction is booked as its own shipment. Book the fall trip 2 to 4 weeks ahead, and let us know your spring dates so we can plan the trip home.
Can you ship a car from Arizona back to Alabama?
Yes. Request a quote with your Arizona pickup address and your Alabama delivery address. It's door-to-door in either direction.
Is my car insured during transport?
Yes. Every carrier we work with is required to carry active cargo insurance. Your car's condition is documented on the Bill of Lading at pickup and checked again at delivery. Personal items left in the vehicle are not covered.
Do I have to pay upfront?
No. There's $0 due at booking. Once a carrier is assigned, you can pay a deposit and the rest to the driver at delivery by cash or check, or pay in full at that point so nothing is due at delivery.
